Roe V. Wade

So to try to get some interesting going again I want to hear the class's opinions on Roe v. Wade. I am not going to write a long post explaining my views because I want to see how many people ge into this before I commit. Consider that a challenge. Back to the question, what boundries should the govt. have in regulating abortion? Where do you draw the line on abortions? Are late-term or partial birth abortions alright? Should abortions be able to be used as a source of birth control? What rights should the father have in abortion? If you do not agree with late term abortions, where do you consider the fetus a form of human life capable of being murdered? I believe those questions should generate some good responses and I promise I will write a lengthy response if I see some posts to keep the fire under the debate, but why should I push if no one pushes back? Also and I know this will be hard for me, please try to keep religion out of this and if you must use morals keep it to secular morals if possible. Religion can not be used to make policies or people cry seperation of church and state (even though that is no where in the constitution, look it up it's only implied). So there you go, let's get more than two people to do the bulk of this, I double dare you.

  1. I think in some curcumstances abortion can be alright for example: rape, incest, or if the mother/or child has severe problems- and is going to die. I dont think that it is right for a mother to want to abort a baby if it just had a birth defect like down sydrome. The Woman and man decided to have sex so they should take full responsibility in their actions. When it comes do drawing the line for abortions I am thinking that it should be before the heart forms which is early on. But I do agree in some curcumstances I would support it. It seems like most people say that it is prochoice and it is up to the mother. However, I think in some cases the father should have some say but only if it wasnt rape, incest etc. Because the baby is half theirs, even if the women has to be the one to carry the baby for 9 months.

  2. i was acrually going to write something on this because in my criminal justice class we discussed this. you beat me tyler.

in responce to heather b's comment when it comes to rape; thats tricky. if you get pregnant with a mans baby that you absolutly resent that would be hard to raise the child. rape is ugly in any circumstances.in my criminal justice class there is a women that was raped and got pregnant. she desided to keep the baby. one point i would like to point out, many of the rapes that happen, the victom knew the attacker.

I believe that if the baby is moving and has a heart beat it is murder to take it out of his/her natural oven (the mother). in my opinion if you get pregnant and you dont want the baby, put it up for adoption. there are hundreds of couples wanting children, dont kill the little ones because of a decision one of the biological parents made.

in my criminal justice class my professor told a story of a women that went into an abortion clinic and had a baby removed from her womb. the baby was almost full grown, and was taken from the mother to another room where he was left to die.

what did the baby do? why did he deserve that?

  3. Abortion is a firestorm issue, and rightfully so, but I think a woman should have the final say concerning her own body.
Many advocate for abortion only in extreme circumstances (rape and/or incest) and excluded all others, but enforcing abortion this way could turn into a bureaucratic nightmare; because if a woman seeking an abortion claims to have been raped, then the only way to be sure that her claim is true, is a convicted perpetrator, but many rape incidents are never prosecuted, either because the rapist was never identified, or never captured. So in this circumstance, the victim could not prove the crime, and therefore, would be denied the procedure.
Not that I think that abortion is the answer; I would much rather see the infant put up for adoption—it’s no secret that countless couples are waiting for the opportunity—but I don’t think that anyone should have the right to tell a woman what she can, or cannot do with her own body.

  4. I think it goes beyond a woman's choice on what she does with her body, there is another body involved, the child. Like Heather, I believe if it has a heart beat and is moving and developing, then it is a human being just the same as you and I. We were all once at that stage once and look at what we have grown to be. That unborn child should have the same opportunity to grow. And if the sex was voluntary in which the child was concieved, then I think the least the parents can do is to wait out nine months and give the child up for adoption and give him/her a chance for life.
With what Nicholas said, I agree that if we made an exception for abortion to women who have been raped etc, the result would not be positive. Either women who really have been raped will not be able to have the procedure because they have no proof, or women will just claim they have been raped, who really have just made a mistake they don't want to deal with. In the end, I think every infant should be given the opportunity to live.

  5. I would say that if you're going to have an abortion, have it early. Don't use it as an escape just because it gets hard. Pregnancy is rough. So if you're going to go through with it, go all the way. If you didn't want to be pregnant to begin with, then if you really deem it necessary, have the abortion as early as possible. Also, i would say if you don't want to be pregnant from the start, then use some sort of birth control. Abortion should be your last resort. If you get pregnant regardless of the birth control, fine. But if you didn't use any means of prevention, then you deserve to be pregnant, and should go through with it. That's really the only part i think the government should have a place in; ensuring that birth control was in fact used, and the woman still became pregnant. If you don't want a baby, take measures to prevent beforehand.

  6. Well it seems that too much of the class has the same view so I will play the Devil'
s advocate. Until the birth certificate is made for the baby, you can't consider it a human. There is no clear definition of when it becomes a life except when it is born, otherwise the only case you can make is at conception. If the baby can not survive on it's own, then it is not a life. Also, we have to keep in mind that mother's who undergo abortion have feelings for their babies so giving the example of a late term abortion is hard on everyone. If abortions are limited to health and rape issues, then we will have every person who doesn't want to be a mother crying rape. Also, the father should have every right the mother has in abortion. It takes two to make a baby, and it should take two to erradicate one. In cases of a convicted rape, the father loses all of these kinds of rights anyway, so that solves that problem. Religions should not have a say in these policies unless the govt. can have a say in theirs. So therefore, abortion should be allowed regardless as long as the patient is fine with it. The woman should have more rights than an unborn child. The woman pays taxes, she does something that is infinately more than the child, so why does the child deserve more rights? Put religion aside and give me logic as to why an unproductive, non-tax paying unborn human deserves more rights? (I do not support this message)

  7. Government shouldn't have a say-it should ultimately be a choice that a woman should decide. Obviously, the father should have some say but a final decision should be made by the mother. Abortion should be allowed for every women, including the teens who had unprotected sex. Although they should take responsibility for their action, many times, the babies that are born are put off for adoption or end up having a horrible life due to irresponsible parents. Many of the teen moms aren't capable of raising kids-for the future of the babies and these teens, they should be able to have abortion if they choose to. However, abortion should be done very early on in the pregnancy; it shouldn't be done after a heart of a fetus is formed.

  8. I think women should be able to make their own choice regarding abortion. I think that if women do not have a choice many woman may suffer grueiling consequences physically and emotionally, many children may be abandoned, left unattended or not provided with basic needs such as having food or a roof over their head.

  9. The thing to remember here is, as Heather B. said from the beginning, in most cases, the couple MADE a choice. They CHOSE to have sex. Once you make a choice, certain consequences follow. The choice to have sex ultimately leads to babies. Point blank. So, if you don't want to deal with the responsibility of having a child, use birth control, or don't have sex. But if you do end up getting pregnant in the end, you should be willing to take responsibility for your CHOICE and give the child up for adoption, or, even better- love, cherish, and raise the child.

It's hard for me to say this, but as has been stated before, rape and incest are a whole other monster. I'm still not sure how I feel about this. I have debated whether in cases like these there should be an option for abortion or not. If there were, however, I would only have it be in the earliest stage.

I at least wish people going through abortion knew more about it before they went through it. I had to do research on this awhile ago, and it was far from pretty, and in many cases it was traumatizing.

This site has a mix of perspectives on the issue: http://www.steadyhealth.com/Pleasant_abortion_stories__Just_curious_girls__t105892.html

This one is a little biased for the anti-abortion side, but here it is for the sake of argument:
